For anyone who lives for experimentation or progressiveness in their music, Frozen Ocean are a band you don’t want to overlook. The Russian one man group return with eighth studio album: THE DYSON SWARM, giving us a deep range of eerie musicality.

Unfortunately, if you picked up this album and were expecting lots of angry screams, then you will be quite disappointed. Band overlord Vaarwel, has written lyrics for only two tracks: ‘CE-4’ and ‘The Dyson Swarm’. But if you were looking for a type of ambient black metal which makes you think of dark woods and forests and winter on one track, and space and the cosmos on the other, THE DYSON SWARM is certainly worth checking out.

Every now and again the album pulls you into a trance with its ambient keys and slightly shoegazy guitars which will please fans of Alcest and Amesoeurs. The guitars on ‘SHGb02+14a’ are reminiscent of Immortal, plus the piano included on the title track gives a gothic aura to this release.

If you are a keen fan of dark classical music and space rock and dark ambience – and have plenty of time on your hands – stick this release on for a long night in. But if you were looking for something similar to Burzum or Ancestral Rhymes, I wouldn’t recommend this album as a primary choice because song lengths are very long and the progression of the structures can be confusing at times.
